The tears were starting to well up in the Dottie Hottie’s eyes this morning, listening to NPR’s coverage of this week’s ceremony changing the name of Dorchester’s Joseph O’Hearn School to the William Henderson School. The story was scored by children singing “Hero” - that Mariah Carey song that the Dottie Hottie otherwise finds irksome. But somehow the sweet voices of the children made it so appropriate.

If you haven’t heard of the remarkable school that is the O’Hearn, with the remarkable man that is its principal Henderson, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? For 20 years, Henderson has been a driving force in making the school a more inclusive, loving place, particularly for differently abled children.

The school will now honor Henderson’s work - which the Dottie Hottie would also recognize as a ministry in public schools - by changing the school’s name. As Henderson plans to retire this year, the administration, teachers, and students all have an incredibly…oh there goes the Dottie Hottie crying again…they have an incredible legacy to continue.

Here’s the Globe’s coverage for more on the Henderson School.

It’s official. The Dottie Hottie has, after careful consideration, decided to endorse Sam Yoon for Mayor of Boston.

The following constitute five important reasons for supporting Mr. Yoon:

1.) He’s Korean. And let’s be honest. More Korean-Americans in local government may mean more Korean Barbecue in Boston. Can you smell the kalbi?

2.) He is smart, articulate, and very kind.

3.) He has a plan for Boston Public Schools. He was a school teacher and he’s sending his kids to Boston Public Schools. He and his wife Tina are invested in making our schools the best in the nation.

4.) He CARES about youth violence. He proposes a 0.5% increase in sales tax to bring $35M to youth programs. Can you IMAGINE all of the tourists in Boston spending their money this summer and turning those dollars into programs that will help kids stay off the streets?

5.) He is Dorchester’s own!! He is proud to be in Dorchester By Choice and the Dottie Hottie would LOVE to have him representing Boston’s hottest hood in City Hall.

The Dottie Hottie received the following correspondence late this evening. Please, let’s keep a neighborhood watch out for this alleged thief, and see that these heavenly flowers are returned to their terra firma!

Hi, Dottie -

My name is Michael, and I live on the corner of Milton & Milwood Sts., in the Cedar Grove area. Maybe you’ve driven by & seen me working in the big yard, trying to make it into something that passersby might enjoy.

Last year, I put my favorite flowering trees in the front yard, right on the corner. They’re Plumeria, from Hawaii, and bloom with a small flower that smells like Heaven. This year, I had done the same, because many neighborhood walkers had told me how much they liked the scent.

This evening, June 16th, as I was sitting in my living room, a person in a dirty grey Chevy pickup stopped next to my house and quickly stole the 3 Plumeria trees from the yard. I got out of the house as quickly as I could, and tried to chase the scum down the street (in my stocking feet), but didn’t manage to get a liscene plate number. He took a left onto Adams St., toward the Village, and took over 20 years of memories with him.

You see, my Mother gave me the oldest of the plants that long ago, and it’s gone through 2 cross country moves with me. I’m so distraught, I don’t know what to do, and was hoping you could get the word out. Maybe some kind person will decide to do the right thing & help me get my trees back.
Thank you for any help you can give.

Michael

Dear Dottie Park Abusers,

Dottie Hottie here again. I get it. You don’t like my surveillance of the Dorchester’s finest parks. In fact, I know you’d prefer I not call Johnny Law on you when you’re setting fire to the basketball courts or administering hand jobs on the playground structures. But I’m annoying in that I have a lot of free time on my hands and am actually just bold enough to think playground structures are for the primary use of the U-12 crowd, so I’ll keep on.

In the meantime, it would be really great if you could dispose of your used c-o-n-d-o-m-s instead of littering them next to the play structures BECAUSE THEY MAKE ME WANT TO RALPH ALL OVER, and if you could cease tinkling in the little playground tunnel (what with so much ample field and woods surrounding for your outhouse needs), that’d be much appreciated, too.

Kindest regards,
Dottie Hottie & Co.

How did you show your Dottie pride this past Sunday?

Did you shake a politician’s hand?
Ride in a float with your Oompa band?

Parley with neighbors and pet their dogs?
Party like a rockstars, eat like hogs?

The Dottie Hottie loved every moment of the Dorchester Day Parade and was clearly not the only one who enjoyed the festivities. All the pols came out, along with dance troupes, bands, Little Miss Dorchester and her entourage, and an elder church lady was POSSIBLY making lovey eyes at DottieBiker (woohoo!). Most impressive was the DotOut float. They seemed to be having the best of times.

How did you spend Dot Day? And what makes you most proud of being a Dottie hottie?
